Aayi Mandapam, also known as the Park Monument, is a prominent historical landmark located at the center
of Bharathi Park in White Town, Puducherry. This elegant white monument was built during the reign of Emperor
Napoleon III in the 19th century. It stands as a tribute to Aayi, a woman remembered for her remarkable act of sacrifice
and generosity. The monument is one of the most recognized symbols of Puducherry’s rich cultural and colonial heritage.
According to local history, Aayi was a courtesan whose house was once mistaken for a temple by a visiting
king because it was beautifully illuminated. When the king realized the mistake, he ordered the house to be demolished.
Aayi willingly accepted the decision and requested that a water reservoir be built on the site to serve the people of the town.
Her noble act contributed to improving the water supply system, and years later, the French government honored her contribution
by constructing Aayi Mandapam.
Architecturally, Aayi Mandapam reflects strong French influence with its classical Greco-Roman design, tall white pillars,
and symmetrical structure. Surrounded by lush greenery and colonial-era buildings, the monument adds charm and elegance
to Bharathi Park.
